MOFA: 1,510 Indonesian Citizens Abroad Infected with Covid-19

Jakarta, InfoPublik – Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that there were no additional new positive cases of Covid-19 from Indonesian citizens abroad on Thursday (24 September).

Thus, the total number of Indonesian citizens infected with Covid-19 abroad is 1,510 people spread across 57 countries.

Of that total, 1,091 patients have recovered, 120 died, and 299 were in treatment. The percentage of Indonesian citizens recovering from Covid-19 abroad today is at 72.2 percent. Saudi Arabia is the country with the highest number of Indonesian citizens exposed to Covid-19, followed by Malaysia and Qatar.

Previously, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said that the government continues to seek the Covid-19 vaccine, both through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Through bilateral cooperation, Indonesia has been promised 20 to 30 million doses of vaccine by the end of 2020, provider of which is Sinovac, a pharmaceutical company from China.

"From the bilateral track, so far there has been a commitment to supply 20-30 million vaccines in 2020," said Retno.

Furthermore, Sinovac will provide 290 to 340 million doses of vaccine by 2021.

Retno explained, currently the vaccine from Sinovac is being tested clinically in South Korea and will then be tested clinically in Indonesia.

"Phase 2 clinical trials will be conducted in Indonesia starting October," the minister said.

She also said that the government is also exploring similar cooperation with British pharmaceutical companies Astra Zaneca and Imperial College London.

In addition, through multilateral cooperation, Indonesia has the opportunity to obtain vaccines from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi).
