Jakarta, InfoPublik - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti underlined the importance of fisheries data supply to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the 32nd Session of FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI).
She said the accurate, updated, and responsible data were important for the preparation of FAO’s State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) publication. Therefore, she called out the global community to manage fishery resources in a responsible and sustainable way.
"I appreciate the implementation of FAO’s questionnaire which is much better now and acknowledge the growing of countries’ participation in the preparation of SOFIA 2016," she said in written statement, Wednesday (7/13).
She led the Indonesian delegation at the event which was held in Rome, Italy on Monday (7/11). The delegation was composed of Task Force 115 expert staffs coordinator Mas Achmad Santosa, port director Agus Suherman, fish resources management director Toni Ruchimat, and the minister’s community and inter-institutional relation affairs expert staff Suseno Sukoyono.
She was invited by FAO who recognized Indonesia as the country with the largest marine resources in the world. The organization also appreciated the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry’s firmed and vital measures in managing the resources.
At the session, she also conveyed Indonesia's commitment on responsible and sustainable fishery efforts.
Indonesia is considered to be a good model for the implementation of commitments in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The country has been taking concrete measures in ratifying and implementing the rules of FAO to tackle IUU. (Translator: Erik Limantara)
