Jakarta, InfoPublik - Production of dry unhusked rice (GKG) in East Java province surged 6.1 percent to 13.05 million tons in 2015. The success of the province’s agricultural sector was in contrast with the neighboring regions—the Central and West Java provinces.

In 2014, East Java’s GKG production was only 12.3 million tons. "The GKG production in East Java increased about 650,000 tons and was the highest in Indonesia," said East Java Governor Soekarwo in his press statement in Surabaya, Wednesday (2/3).

Mr. Soekarwo stated Central Java’s production decreased 600,000 tons, while West Java 800,000 tons. In fact, 36.6 percent of the populations of East Java who work in the agricultural sector only produce 14.7 percent of agricultural products. The agricultural failures often trigger the local farmers to move to the cities.

"They move to the cities which led to the high unemployment numbers. So, I urged them to work in the post-harvest industry,” he said. (Translator: Erik Limantara)
