Bawaslu Encourages Women's Participation

Jakarta, InfoPublik - Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) chairman Abhan encouraged women's participation in overseeing 2020 regional head elections.

Abhan said the involvement of women in regional elections is very important and he hoped that they are willing to participate in overseeing the elections owing to the large number of women voters.

"The regional elections will be successful by ensuring synergy, cooperation and supervision solidity," he said in his written statement on Monday (2/9/2019).

Furthermore, he also encouraged the revision of Law Number 10 of 2016 concerning regional elections.

"We took note that we should conduct a revision to the institutional nomenclature. To date, we have Bawaslu and Panwas (election supervisory committee). We propose to have one institution, Bawaslu," he said.

He added that after the submission of proposal letter and academic paper to the House of Representatives, there would be discussions to merge the proposed provisions tothe revision to regional elections law.

"It is expected that the government and the House who have the authority to formulate regulation could synergize immediately. In fact, we have submitted the academic paper," he concluded. (Reporter: eko Budiono,Translator: Erik Limantara)
