Jakarta, InfoPublik- House of Representatives (DPR) members responded positively to the President’s request to accelerate the Citizenship Act drafting.
"We are also responding to the concerns of millions of parents who lost their children over transnational marriages. We should immediately seek for solution to this problem," said House of Representatives member Eva Kusuma Sundari in Jakarta, Sunday (8/21).
She said today is the era of global openness. There are no more barriers between countries, so that international marriage is inevitable. This causes the dual citizenship problem continues to grow.
"Indonesia must open itself; it can no longer avoid such things. If there is a negative impact on the problem, we can minimalize it by giving restrictions," she said.
Many Indonesian citizens abroad could not return to Indonesia because Indonesia has no regulation concerning dual citizenship. However, not all those having dual citizenship will be given space; limitations shall be in place. "We need to embrace them for the benefit of the country, for improving national development," she said. (Translator: Wilda Stiana)
