Jakarta, InfoPublik—The governments of Indonesia and the United States (US) are paying attention to the peace process in Afghanistan.
This topic was discussed by Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and US’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Jakarta, Thursday (29/10).
"We appreciate the US leadership in the efforts for peace in Afghanistan, and Indonesia is ready to contribute, especially in issues related to women's empowerment," said Retno.
According to Retno, the two countries also discussed the issue of Palestine which is struggling to face Israeli occupation.
Retno told Pompeo that the issue was close to the hearts of the Indonesian people. During the meeting, Indonesia emphasized peace efforts based on the principle of a two-state solution.
Retno said that Indonesia and the US also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO).
"To reflect our commitment to PKO, I am giving an example that Indonesia is ready to maintain its naval vessels in Lebanon for another six months," she said.
In addition to that, the bilateral meeting also discussed issues regarding cooperation in the sectors of economy, education, and the South China Sea (SCS) which is still being a polemic.
Indonesia’s Foreign Minister saw this opportunity to call for US-based business people to invest in Indonesia.
"I encourage US companies to invest more in Indonesia, including in projects on the outer islands of Indonesia, such as Natuna Island," she said.
Retno added that the Indonesian and US governments agreed to strengthen their economic ties. This cooperation is in the context of strengthening global supply chains and accelerating economic recovery.
Indonesia at the same time thanked the US government for cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic, including the provision of 1,000 ventilators.
"I also emphasize the importance of building health resilience nationally and regionally, in which the United States can play an important role in supporting these efforts," she said.
Previously, the US Government confirmed its rejection of China's unilateral claims to the South China Sea (SCS).
The US also praised the Indonesian government which has shown courage on the issue in Asia, and the United Nations (UN). (Photo: Ministry of Foreign Affairs) (Reporter: Eko Budiono, Translator: Penni P. Rusman)
