Jakarta, InfoPublik – The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) director general Irina Bokova appreciated the Indonesian government's support in freedom of the press.
"Indonesia is the largest democratic nation and can set an example for other countries in providing information to the public," she said at the opening ceremony of the World Press Freedom Day 2017 at the Jakarta Convention Center on wednesday (5/3).
She also stated that the freedom of the press has contributed to good governance.
Unesco, she continued, expressed its gratitude to the Indonesian government and the Press Council for hosting the WPFD 2017 event.
"We will continue to promote the freedom of the press, so journalists can feel safe in exercising their profession,” she said.
Furthermore, she continued, violence against press still occurred in a number of countries such as Iraq, Nepal and South Sudan.
"In South America, journalists still face threats and violence, and it is a challenge that must be resolved," she said. (Reporter: Eko Budiono, Translator: Rina Alexandra)
