Jakarta, InfoPublik - Indonesian Press Council chairman Yosep Adi Prasetyo urged all journalists to improve their professionalism.
"Many cases of violence against journalists resulted from the lack of professional attitude and competence," said Yosep in a series of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2017 event held at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Tuesday (2/5).
According to Yosep, in 2016 there were 74 cases of violence experienced by journalists, but only 3 or 4 cases were reported to the press council.
"There could be cases that are not reported or only privately resolved," he said.
He asserted, a task force consisting of the police, the military, and the press council has been established to prevent violence against journalists.
UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information Frank La Rue said every journalist is entitled to protection in exercising his/her profession.
"The media companies have responsibility for the safety and security of journalists," he said.
He stated, journalists also have the right to protect the confidentiality of their sources. (Reporter Eko Budiono, Translator: Siti Chodijah)
