Jakarta, Info Publik – UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information Frank La Rue said safety guarantees for journalists is a major issue in the World Press Freedom Day 2017.
"We encourage all stakeholders to respect freedom of speech and expression," La Rue said in World Press Freedom Day 2017 press conference held at Kenari Room, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Tuesday (2/5).
La Rue stated that UNESCO hoped that dialogue between various parties such as government and the press to be improved.
"We also expect various parties such as the government and civil society to find solutions in improving protection for journalists," he said.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Press Council chairman Yoseph Adi Prasetyo felt honored that Indonesia has been trusted as the host for the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in 2017.
"WPFD is an important forum since Indonesia can utilize this event to share experiences with other countries particularly in facing the dynamics in the freedom of the press," he said.
He added that other countries such as Russia, Germany, and the United States are also facing the high spreading fake newa.
"With the incessant anti-hoax news campaign, the public is expected to be able to distinguish real news and fake news. We implore the public to be selective in choosing news, and not immediately believe the news circulating the social media," he added. (Reporter: Eko Budiono, Translator: Siti Chodijah)
