Jakarta, Info Publik - Commission I vice chairman Meutya Viada Hafid said Indonesian government is unlikely to close the video hosting site YouTube and search engine Google to address pornography and violence problems as proposed by the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI).
"In my opinion, we can only block its contents, we can not block the entire site. Moreover, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) is forming cyber police to monitor illegal contents,” She said, in Jakarta, Friday (10/6).
She explained that the cyber police will filter negative contents on the internet. If there is any negative content that give bad impact for society, government could follow up immediately.
According to this Golkar Party politician, Google and Youtube are sites that have access to variety of information and can also be used for positive things. "The closure of these information source sites is not right for the benefit of society," she added.
Furthermore, this Parliament member from the North Sumatera I Constituency explained that United States, Singapore and Australia, have been making use of their cyber police maximally. Indonesia should immediately adjust to global developments as other countries do, she added.
Furthermore, she also suggested MCIT to improve and renew its internet content filtering program which is currently running, such as the Internet Sehat (Healthy Internet). "Rather than blocking Google and YouTube services, it is better to improve the internet sehat, because many citizens are actually gaining positive impacts from Google and YouTube," she concluded.
