Bali, InfoPublik – Indonesia Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s expert staff Freddy H. Tulung stated that act on Protection of Personal Data is very vital for Indonesia, without which detrimental impact may occur. For example, the European Union banned data transfer to countries that do not provide data protection.
In a public consultation event entitled “Strengthening the Conception of Substantive and Applicative Personal Data Protection Regulation” held at Aston Kuta Hotel and Residence, Bali, on Tuesday (5/3) Mr. Tulung explained that European Union had imposed EU General Data Protection Regulation. The regulation enables the EU to reject data transfer to countries that do not have or do not provide equivalent protection of personal data.
He stated that by date, Indonesia and Laos become the only countries that do not have act on PDP. "In Laos, the regulation has entered their Legislation Council," said Mr. Tulung.
He also expressed that Malaysia have enacted Personal Data Protection Act since 2010 which later accompanied by the establishment of personal data protection commission. Meanwhile, Singapore and the Philippines have also implemented the act since 2012.
The ban from EU could bring detrimental effect since Indonesia becomes priority in the development of business by corporation. (Translator: Siti Chodijah)
