During the occasion of Indonesia Week! at Potters Fields in London, Mr. Dipo Alam founder of the Indonesia Batik Foundation presented a batik painting of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh, together with a book dedicated to Indonesia woman batik artisan, in Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, the 31st of May 2016 at 10-am BST (or 4-pm WIB Indonesia time).
The gifts are part of the Queen’s 90th birthday, celebrated on 21st April, the same day as Indonesia celebrates Kartini Day, commemorating the role of Kartini, a woman heroin who fought for education of girls and women's rights in Indonesia.
“The painting imagines Queen Elizabeth II wearing Indonesia Batik that combines the symbolism of Sawunggalih a royal Insignia representing glory, with a terrace of paddy fields as the background” says Dipo Alam. Dipo will also present a hand drawn fine batik or batik tulis halus, combining the traditional batik motif of Sawunggalih symbolizing glory and victory with an iconic royal ornament of Great Britain.
Through the Gifts, Dipo hopes that Queen Elizabeth II and the People of Britain will get to know Indonesia batik better and promote an enthusiasm to learn more about Batik. This matches the mission of the Indonesia Batik foundation- to promote and conserve Indonesia batik, whilst elevating its artisans to be known internationally.
Queen Elizabeth II’s official visit to Indonesia was on 18th March 1974, sailing on the Royal Yacht Britannia, visiting Bali and docking in Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta. The Queen’s State visit opened up a new chapter in the Indonesia-UK relationship.
