Jakarta, InfoPublik - The Alliance of Independent Journalists’ (AJI) Secretary General Arfi Bambani Amri acknowledged that the government has shown high commitment in protecting the safety and security of journalists.

"Now we should see whether the implementation of the commitment is optimal," said Arfi on the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2017 held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, Wednesday (3/5).

He hoped that following the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2017, violence cases against journalists will decrease.

"Ideally there will be no more violence against journalists in exercising their profession. Media company owners’ commitment to protect journalist still needs to be improved," said Arfi.

Meanwhile, Unesco Chair of University of Gothenburg Sweden Ulla Carlsson stated eliminating violence against journalist requires time.

"WPFD 2017 is certainly a good momentum to protect the journalists," she said.

Carllson stated that relevant stakeholders must provide maximum support to ensure the journalist can work professionally. (Reporter: Eko Budiono, Translator: Siti Chodijah)
