Indonesia condems terror attack at church in Egypt

Jakarta, InfoPublik – Indonesian government condemned a series of terror attacks in Egypt which targeted civilians on Sunday (4/9) at churches in Tanta and Alexandria.

In a press statement released on Monday (4/10), the Foreign Ministry stated that Indonesia is following the situation in Egypt and expressed sympathies and condolences to the people and government of Egypt, particularly to the victims and their families. The Indonesian government conveyed its full solidarity to the government and people of Egypt in this difficult time.

Indonesia believed the Egyptian government will be able to uncover the perpetrators immediately and bring them to justice.

The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo maintains communication with Indonesian communities in Egypt. Based on the record, there are 128 Indonesians in Alexandria and 21 in Tanta.

The embassy reported no Indonesians are among the victims.

At least 36 people were killed and more than hundred others were injured in the bomb attacks at two Coptic churches on Sunday. It was the latest militian attack toward the minorities.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack which occured a week before Coptic Easter in the same month of Pope Francis’ scheduled visit to Egypt.

According to Egypt Health Ministry, the first bombing was occurred in Tanta, a Nile delta town of less than 100 kilometers outside of Cairo, killing at least 25 people and injuring at least 78 people.

Just hours later, the second attack by a suicide bomber was occurred in Alexandria, killing 11, including three policemen and wounded 35 people.
