Manokwari, InfoPublik - World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Indonesia is developing environmental education and conservation programs in two regencies in Papua and West Papua including Cenderawasih Bay.
Community Outreach Coordinator of WWF Indonesia in Cenderawasih Bay, Veronica Manoas, said WWF has compiled six books which are ready to be included as local content in the curriculum of 2013.
"The book’s title is ‘Gurano Bintang.’ It will be taught in nine primary schools in the coastal areas of Wondama Bay regency in West Papua province and Nabire regency in Papua province. The book has been printed amounting to 3,000 copies of the financial support from the Wondama Bay government in 2015," she said, Monday (2/29).
This year, WWF-Indonesia along with the Institute for Education Quality Assurance and Education Department of West Papua will conduct training for teachers who will teach these subjects.
"There are 15 teachers to be trained in Wondama Bay and 6 teachers in Nabire. The implementation is planned to be conducted in 2019, since 2006 curriculum is still applied until 2018," she said.
Implementation of environmental education and conservation cannot be done in all elementary schools in these two regencies because WWF-Indonesia still focuses on assisting villages which currently become the pilot project of the program.
She hoped that the nine elementary schools will become models for other schools. Therefore, environmental education and conservation can be completely applied throughout the school.
"Tonight we are leaving for Nabire to provide training for teachers there. We will stay for 10 days, and then we will continue to Wondama Bay for 15 days," she added. (Mkr/infocomm /toeb/Translator: Siti Chodijah)
