11 Regencies/Cities Potentially Listed as World Cultural Heritage

Jakarta, InfoPublik - A total of 11 regencies and cities member of the program of management and conservation of heritage city or P3KP (Program Penataan dan Pelestarian Kota Pusaka) coordinated by Indonesia Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) are potentially listed as world cultural heritage sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Some of which are: Sawahlunto, Purbolinggo, Denpasar, Tidore, Mataram, Cirebon, Karang Asem, and Semarang.

The Ministry’s Director of Settlement Infrastructure Integration Dwityo Akoro Soeranto said that P3KP is a program to promote Indonesian heritage assets. The program is conducted by registering heritage cities, that is, cities in Indonesia that have cultural heritage buildings with significant value to the city.

"Currently, P3KP has a total of 45 member  regencies/cities that will be facilitated to become national heritage city and are divided into four regional groups throughout Indonesia," he said.

In order to realize it, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is collaborating with experts from UNESCO, Malaysia and Thailand to share experiences regarding the preparation and procedures to be UNESCO’s world heritage city. 

"Directorate General of Human Settlements will help heritage cities in Indonesia to fulfill the requirements as one of the cultural heritages at world level," he said. (Translator: Sugiarti)
