FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Solo – Indonesian lifter, Ni Nengah Widiasih, secured her place in the history of para powerlifting in the women’s 45 kg class at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games Solo.

Ni Nengah Widiasih broke the ASEAN Para Games (APG) record with the best lift of 97 kg. She broke her record of 96 kg when she competed at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games Malaysia.

Aside from breaking a record, she also took home two gold medals from the match held at Solo Paragon Hotel on Monday (1 August 2022) afternoon. Ni Nengah Widiasih, familiarly called Widi, won two gold medals from the best lift and total lift categories.

Widi recorded the best lift with 97 kg on her first attempt. She left her only rival in the 45 kg class, Achelle Guion from the Philippines, far behind. Achelle Guion only managed to lift 70 kg as the best lift on her first attempt.

Both Widi and Guion failed on their second and third attempts. As a result, Widi received another gold for total lift. This achievement meant that Widi successfully obtained gold medals for five times in a row in the ASEAN Para Games. This para powerlifter from Karangasem, Bali, previously became the best at the 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 ASEAN Para Games.

After the competition, Widi expressed her relief at meeting the target of obtaining gold medals for Indonesia. However, she felt that she was not at her best performance after failing to lift 99 kg on her second and third attempts. Widi cited fitness problems as the cause.

“I would like to apologize to the Indonesian people that I did not perform optimally today. To be honest, my shoulder was not in a good condition. However, that should not be an excuse. Thank God, I was still allowed to win gold medals,” she said.

Widi stated that her record at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games will be her homework to improve herself as she is preparing to compete in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

“What is certain is that I cannot be complacent. I need better preparation for next year’s championships,” Widi said.
