Serang, InfoPublik - The public were expected to upload useful information and contents that brought benefit to religious harmony in Indonesia across social media.

This was stated by the Communications and Information Technology Ministry’s (MCIT) director for public media management Sunaryo when opening a dialogue forum under the theme
“Preserving Diversity by Using Social Media Wisely” in Serang City, Banten Province, Thursday (23/11).

"Disseminate positive contents to preserve the diversity in the NKRI [Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia]," said Sunaryo.

He added that the rapid growth of social media technology was not followed by intelligence in using it. This led to the spread of fake news or hoaxes, hate speeches, and defamations.

MCIT had conducted measures of taking down negative contents. Hence, it was impossible to achieve its goals if it was not supported by the social media users’ understanding.

"Social media used for negative things have the potential to divide the national unity," he said.

This dialogue was organized by MCIT’s Directorate General for Public Information and Communications in collaboration with the Inter-religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) of Banten Province. The forum was attended by 100 participants who represented various religious organizations in Indonesia.

On that occasion, the Banten Province FKUB chair Prof. Suparman Usman said that diversity was inevitable in Indonesia.

“Diversity is the advantages possessed by Indonesia and must be maintained. It is our responsibility as the children of the nation to preserve the diversity," said Prof. Suparman Usman. (Elvira) (Translator: Erik Limantara)
