Indonesia Chairs Global Health Security Agenda 2016 Steering Group

Jakarta, InfoPublik - Indonesia was appointed as the Chairman of the Steering Group and Troika for the group countries of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) 2016.

In a meeting led by Indonesian Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek, Indonesia emphasized the importance of enhancing national capacity in facing global health threat.
 
According to Minister Moeloek, migration and movement of people between countries and regions that occur in very large scale are believed to contribute to the rising of global health threat.
 
"In this regard, international community should continue to take measures to address various global health threats, especially by strengthening each country’s national capacity in facing a global health threat," said Ms. Moeloek in the GHSA meeting at the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Geneva, Switzerland.
 
She emphasized that the countries cooperation in GHSA is believed to be able to assist every involved country to increase its national capacity. A number of action packages that have been formulated and performed by all GHSA countries will help each country to strengthen its ability to detect, prevent, and manage various pandemic threats.
 
According to Minister Moeloek, all activities to be undertaken by GHSA countries should be based on the main objective: to increase every country’s national capacity in implementing the WHO International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR) as the main guidelines for all countries in facing pandemic threats.
 
GHSA is a voluntary cooperation among about 60 countries with the main goal of improving the capacity of member countries in facing the threat of global pandemic through the exchanges of experience and cooperation to increase national capacity in detecting, preventing, and combating a pandemic.
 
Indonesia is one of the countries which have been involved since the beginning of the establishment of GHSA cooperation in 2014. In 2016, Indonesia becomes the Chairman of the Steering Group of GHSA which consists of 10 member countries, namely Indonesia, the United States, South Korea, Finland, Chile, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, India, Canada, and Italy, as well as a number of international organizations such as WHO, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), and OIE (World Organization of Animal Health).
 
Indonesia also serves as the Chairman of GHSA Troika for 2016 together with Finland and South Korea. (Translator: Penni Patmawati Rusman)
