Jakarta, InfoPublik - In 2020, Indonesia is expected to issue Law on Personal Data Protection (PDP Law). The government was optimistic since Communications and Informatics Ministry and the House of Representatives have discussed the draft and it is just a matter of time before the law is enacted, Communications and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate said at National Media Chief Editors’ Forum titled "Diskusi Bareng Bang Johnny" or "Discussion with Mr. Johnny" in Jakarta, Monday (9/12/2019).

"We need a law that serves properly as the regulatory umbrella of data sovereignty," said Minister Johnny.

He further explained that the government had carried out its task in building infrastructure, including telecommunications and digital infrastructure.

"Palapa Ring has been installed for 12,000 kilometers, a 36,000 kilometers-long fiber optic cable network has been established, and thousands of BTS have been built. We currently use five HTS satellites and we will deploy new satellites in the foreseeable future," he said.

We are a big nation, therefore, we need a large infrastructure. "We still have to deploy to the last mile. We want at least 10 Mbps internet speed in the outermost and frontier areas. After it’s fulfilled, we can increase the internet speed to 30Mbps,” he added.

After the PDP Law being enacted, the next step is to integrate the data center. The minister stated that the initial move will be taken by the government. There are tens of thousands of data centers that need to be integrated.

Data protection, speed and accuracy hold a very strategic role. "Data has a greater value than oil and gas," Minister Johnny concluded.
