Jakarta, Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, said that the process of electing Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta could take place more quickly.

"We have sent letters to Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) and to the governor. So it’s not Governor Anies’ fault. It depends on the supporting political parties. I believe the two parties could consolidate quickly," said the minister at Aryaduta Hotel, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (16/7).

Tjahjo added that in accordance with Law Number 1 of 2015 and its revision, Law Number 8 of 2015 concerning Election of Regional Heads, the DPRD still has approximately six months to elect the Deputy Governor.

"We acknowledge a provision that after reaching the last 18 months of the term of service, the vacant position of a governor or a deputy governor shall not be filled. However, we are still allowed to elect a deputy governor now but the central government does not have the authority to force the position to be filled," he explained.

The position of Jakarta Deputy Governor has been left vacant for almost one year since August 2018. Two nominated candidates are Achmad Syaikhu and Agung Yulianto from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). (Reporter: Eko Budiono, Translator: Erik Limantara)
