Komnas HAM has been handling tens of thousands of cases during its 25 years of establishment, Chairman says

Jakarta, InfoPublik – The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has handled tens of thousands of cases since its establishment, 25 years ago, through monitoring and mediation mechanisms. The goal is the certainty the protection and fulfillment of human rights.

"Tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of individuals and community groups have also received certainty and fulfillment of their rights thanks to Komnas HAM's performance," said Komnas HAM Chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik in a written statement received by InfoPublik on Monday (7/9).

Taufan reckoned that Komnas HAM has handled 13 cases of severe human rights violations as mandated by the Law on Human Rights Court. Cases of Tanjung Priok in 1984, East Timor in 1999 and Abepura, Papua in 2000 have had their verdicts delivered. 

"Ten other cases, among others, the case of the disappearance of activists in 1997/1998, the Trisakti, Semanggi I and II tragedies, and the tragedy of May 1998, have not been followed up by the Attorney General Office," said Taufan.

He explained that Komnas HAM has adopted various means and approaches to encourage the handling of cases as part of the fulfillment of victims’ right to justice.

"Recently, on June 8, 2018, Komnas HAM have met and asked President Joko Widodo to order the Attorney General to follow up the cases. We expected the just settlement of the cases. We also believe the president will fulfill his obligations and encourage the nation to become a civilized nation and manifest human rights as a constitutional right for every single citizen," he asserted.

Reflecting from the above conditions, Taufan added, in carrying out its mandate, Komnas HAM desperately needs support and encouragement from related parties, including from former commissioners.

"We extend our highest gratitude and appreciation to former commissioners who have dedicated their lives to this institution for the advancement and upholding of human rights," he said. (Translator: Erik Limantara)
