Jakarta, InfoPublik - Garuda Indonesia Airlines announced that it would redirect its flight operations to and from London from Gatwick to Heathrow International Airport.

Head of Corporate Communications of PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Benny Butarbutar explained that the redirection will take effect on March 31, 2016. According to him, it is considered as a part of the company's efforts to strengthen its aviation network in Europe, especially in England. "Garuda Indonesia’s flights from Jakarta to London Heathrow will be served by Singapore (transit), while from London Heathrow to Jakarta will be served non-stop with a frequency of five times per week," said Mr. Butarbutar during the break of the 50th anniversary of the company’s flights to Singapore commemorative event, Tuesday (1/26).

“The transfer will allow Garuda Indonesia and its passengers to enjoy the full benefit of SkyTeam membership, including the SkyTeam lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 4.

In addition, the strategic position of Heathrow which is connected with 1,052 destinations served by SkyTeam will also facilitate Garuda Indonesia passengers who wish to continue their flights to destinations other than Europe.”

Related to the 50th anniversary of Garuda Indonesia flights to Singapore, he said that it was an effort to strengthen the position of Garuda Indonesia in the Singapore market. Garuda’s first flight 50 years ago from Indonesia to Singapore is significant because it had improved the economic relations between the two countries.

“This anniversary is also one of the most important milestones for Garuda Indonesia to strengthen people-to-people or heart-to-heart relation for the two nations that is becoming more important in the future, especially in the era of aviation liberalization in Southeast Asia [ASEAN Open Skies],“ he said.

During the 50 years of its operations to Singapore, Garuda Indonesia has been carrying up to 32 million passengers on the route from Jakarta to Singapore. In the last 10 years, Garuda Indonesia has carried up to 8.2 million passengers on the route, with a growth rate of 9.4 percent.

"To anticipate the market demand growth as well as an effort to increase foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia, in December 2014, Garuda Indonesia started to increase the frequency of flights from Jakarta to Singapore to 10 times a day. It made Garuda Indonesia as the frequency leader on Jakarta-Singapore route,” he said. (Translator: Erik Limantara)
