Jakarta, InfoPublik - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the potential of the sea in Indonesia needs to be supported by strong human resources.

"Indonesia's maritime sector has enormous potential. Two thirds of our territory is the vast oceans and long coastlines. Whereas, if it is not supported by strong human resources it will be futile," said Transportation Minister, Saturday (7/28).

Minister Budi Karya added that the current government emphasises its programs in the maritime sector, such as the development of sea toll road and acceleration of port development, as well as the vision of maritime economic development require quality driving energy, namely the strong human resources from national maritime school graduates.

"Sea transportation for maritime countries like Indonesia is inevitable especially for logistic distribution activities. The well-connected sea transportation also contributes to price equity in all regions of Indonesia. It is also one of the purposes of the sea toll program," explained the Minister.

According to Budi Karya, the sea toll program is able to reduce prices in eastern Indonesia. "This price reduction is a proof that sea transportation is the solution to bridge the price gap in Indonesia.”

At the same time, the minister also said that sea transportation contributed to the rise of the Logistic Performance Index (LPI) where in 2018 it is in the 46th position, improved form the 63rd position in 2017.

"Sea transportation also contributes to the rise of the LPI in 2018, I hope in the future our logistics performance will continue to improve for wider public welfare," he concluded. (Reporter: Dian Thenniarti Translator: Erik Limantara)
